'Harbouring Voices: Oral Histories of whitby's Fishing Community'.
Join us at Whitby Museum for one of the first official screening of Harbouring Voices, a documentary capturing the voices and lived experiences of Whitby’s fishing community.
Through personal stories from fishermen, auctioneers, and engineers, the film reflects on the town’s maritime heritage, its changes, and its enduring connections to the sea. This project was initiated through a conversation between George Lamplough (fishermen, Whitby) and Freya Ivy Palmer (PhD student, University of Southampton) and has collaborated with the Whitby Museum, contributing to their local archives to preserve these oral histories for future generations.
All are welcome to attend - including fishermen, families, regulators, and anyone with an interest in coastal communities and heritage. Tickets are free when bought in person from the Whitby Museum reception during opening hours. Tickets can also be bought online (£1 online booking fee applies. Tickets are limited; advance booking is recommended.
This project has been funded by the University of Southampton Higher Education Innovation Funding by the Southampton Marine & Maritime Institute and the Sustainability & Resilience Institute.
